A recent documentary on BBC 3 (a British television channel) featured Beckii Cruel (Rebecca Flint), a 14-year-old girl from the Isle of Man who has become an Internet celebrity and popstar in Japan. Beckii became famous after posting videos of herself dancing to J-pop using her own choreography. She did this secretly, without telling her parents. Beckii commonly cosplays in Haruhi Suzumiya costumes and has done covers for songs like Bouken Desho Desho? and Hare Hare Yukai. Liz Ohanesian from the LA Weekly Blogs sent in a link to a cool article about the Haruhi Suzumiya series. It’s a great primer to help explain the wonderfulness of this series to newcomers and spread Haruhiism. The post also contains many photographs taken by Shannon Cottrell at the premiere of the Haruhi Suzumiya movie in L.A., so it’s definitely worth checking out. Perhaps riding off the wave of popularity generated by the Haruhi Suzumiya movie, a new Japanese commercial from the company Lotte will use Haruhi Suzumiya characters to advertise their Acuo brand gum. The short commercial features actor Toma Ikuta using his nice gum-freshened breath to transform girls… and cats into Haruhi, Mikuru and Yuki. Yes, it is as weird as it sounds, so watch it for yourself below.

Haruhi media has been spotted in a “Akihabara Majokko Princess” music video from actress Kirsten Dunst, McG and Takashi Murakami. The video was shot in Tokyo’s Akihabara district and features Dunst singing The Vapors’ “Turning Japanese” song while cosplaying as a Majokko (Mahou Shoujo or Magic Girl). Dunst is a self-professed chidhood Sailor Moon fan and has provided dubbing for the English version of Kiki’s Delivery Service film in the past.
