Odd Haruhi news of the month comes in the form of this video:

So you’re probably wondering what that was about. The guy in the video is Minoru Shiraishi, who voices Taniguchi in the Melancholy Haruhi Suzumiya. These shorts of Minoru getting lost in a mountainous forest are apparently DVD bonus features released along with limited edition DVDs released in Japan in 2009. Now the full video has been edited and cut into an 80 minute DVD that will be released on September 24, 2010. It might seem strange but if you’ve watched Lucky Star before, you’ll probably be familiar with the live-action scenes of Minoru Shiraishi (who voices the animer version of himself in the show) singing and doing other wacky stuff at the end of the credits. Minoru getting lost in the mountains may possibly even be a running gag of a similar scenario done to him in Lucky Star:

The main feature is listed as having only 70 minutes of footage while the other ten minutes are a new bonus feature. The combined running time of the features on the LE R2 2009 DVDs totaled 116:01 minutes, so they’ve cut out about 46 minutes of footage.

The set comes with a 4 page booklet and the planning for the project.

Also, he served as the red orge in the Haruhi-chan DVD/BD Box commercials. They’re on Kadokawa’s channel (scroll down) if anyone would like to see them.

This sounds like a fun distraction. I think all of those characters in the anime are creative enough and complicated enough to have a bit of a spin-off. Can’t wait to see it.
