haruhi-movie-2010-lineupIn case anyone forgot, the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya movie premiered this past Saturday in movie theaters across Japan to great fanfare. At the Sunshine Cinema in Tokyo, die-hard Haruhi fans began lining up 8 hours prior to the first screening in the cold of the early morning (source); the line-up eventually stretched up to 500 people. As common to many anime movie events, Haruhi merchandise and special promotional items were readily available to be gobbled up by avid Haruhiists. Some photos of the movie premiere can be seen here.

So how did Haruhi hold up to the competition on opening day? Here’s the latest rankings for the February 6-7 box office weekend in Japan:
1. Avatar (365 theatres)
2. Oceans (302 theaters)
3. Brothers (303 theaters)
4. Invictus (320 theatres)
5. Golden Slumber (308 theatres)
6. Samurai Sentai Shinkenger vs. Go-Onger Silver Screen Version (140 theatres)
7. The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (24 theatres)
8. Lovely Borne (305 theatres)
9. 5 Days’ Sayonara (184 theatres)
10. Paranormal Activity (160 theatres)

I know some fans will be complaining that it didn’t rank higher up, but considering that it opened in only 24 theaters across Japan (normal for an anime film), the movie did quite well for itself against the mainstream competition. Here’s hoping the producers will try to capitalize on the Haruhi fanfare and begin overseas premieres of the Haruhi movie in the near future.

I think it’s awesome that it got 7th place considering the number of theaters it’s playing in is less than a quarter of most of the others.

I really hope Bandai decides to release it in theaters in the U.S. soon. Though chances are there will be very few screenings and I won’t be able to get to any of theaters.

I re-watched both seasons of the anime on the day it came out. Well, minus seven of the Endless Eight, but I did watch the final one. Hopefully, Bandai will realize how much of a following this show has and try to do something about getting the movie to us earlier. I’m glad they’re getting to the second season, though.

7th place is pretty darn good for it only being in 24 theaters! And I doubt that when they bring the movie over that they’ll screen it in theaters. It’s probually be a direct to DVD movie. They NEVER show anime movies in theaters unless its like Ponyo or Howls Moving Castle or such

come on, why is it australia that misses out considering all anime reaches asia, north america, and the pacific but for some reason australia is the slowest to reap the benifits of anime including the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya! it took 2009 for me to even hear of the anime!

  • Tsuruya-chan said:

That is late, but I thought Madman licensed Haruhi for Australia back in 2007?

  • Tchi said:

But why only 24 theaters? D:
Oh how I want it to come to Scandinavia!

  • Tchi said:

^ Yeah I know it’s normal…but still >_> Haruhi provides just as much (if not more) entertainment as its competitioners.

I just finished watching bambo leaf rhapsody in the series in chronological order. This made me so excited to see the movie. I can’t wait for the english version (even though I like the japanese voices so much more in fact I would prefer subtitles) anyways I just am so happy that Haruhi actually is competing with avatar!

  • haruhi said:

yeah that is true avatar in 3d was a little better than the 2d effect
anyway haruhism is definitely getting more popular than christianity and scientology
