Baka-Tsuki Stops English Translation on Haruhi Suzumiya Novels
As some of you may have heard Baka-Tsuki, the only fan translation group of the Haruhi Suzumiya light novels, has ceased the English translation project on its website. On January 20, 2010, the English copyright holder Hachette Book Group sent a request to Baka-Tsuki to remove all infringing materials, this included both the Haruhi Suzumiya and Spice and Wolf translation projects; however non-English translations of the books are still available. HaruhiSuzumiya.net currently still hosts volumes 1-9 of Baka-Tsuki’s translations to support those fans who do not have access to the novels in their native countries. However, we will likely have to remove them if a similar request is made to our website in the future. We do strongly encourage fans of Nagaru Tanigawa’s work to purchase the official books if possible (currently about $10 USD). Having purchased the English versions myself, I can vouch that it is a superior quality translation compared to Baka-Tsuki’s work (no offense meant towards the hard-working volunteers at B-K) and has all the original illustrations by Noizi Ito. There’s no better way to support the author and encourage the creation of more Haruhi novels in the future.

I had no idea you guys had all of Baka-Tsuki’s translations here on your site =D I just took volume 9, the last one I needed. I’ll be sure to direct people here who are still looking for them.
I’ve been buying the official releases and I agree that they’re excellent quality.
It’s a shame about Baka-Tsuki…I hope someone else decides to translate volume 10 when it comes out.
Amazon can’t even tell the manga from the novels *_*
As far as i know, only novels #1 and #2 are translated in English, so I’m glad I could download, set, impose, print, ligature and read all 9 unofficial translations. With many, many thanks to Baka-Tsuki and no thanks at all to Hachette/Yen Press.
As much as this saddens me, I already have the said novels on a hard drive. Until they bring out all 10 of the novels in English, I won’t be deleting them any time soon.
Lol, now this is rich.
It’s been “leaked” several times on the net that some of the people who worked on the Baka-Tsuki translation also worked on the official translation – hence the massive similarities between the two translations.
Superior word choice on occasions, but if you actually compare them they are almost word for word identical in most of the paragraphs – something that doesn’t occur often with Japanese to English translation unless someone is using someone’s already existing translation as a template
I guess they don’t like to shoot themselves in the feet too much!
I did a comparison of some random passages in the first book, there are similarities but certainly not enough to say Hachette copied B-T. So I did a little more digging and found this article http://spongbros.co.uk/blog/2009/03/30/english-haruhi-light-novel-uses-afks-fan-translation/. It suggests that a translator named Strato, who worked for both a.f.k. (who fansubbed Haruhi season 1) and Baka-Tsuki, went pro and started working for Hachette. Onizuka-GTO, one the owners of Baka-Tsuki, seems to confirm this. If that’s really the case, then I can understand the similarities between the two translations. If it was mostly Strato’s work to begin with, then he certainly has the right to use it as reference – after all, the poor guy is translating the same book twice. Still, I wish they would have had Baka-Tsuki continue their work on the books. If it wasn’t for fansubbers and translators, Haruhi wouldn’t be half as popular as it is today outside Japan.
AFK have also done a sub of the 2009 episodes, although it’s unclear whether Strato was involved or not with the project.
Once I stumbled upon a page on a website that said the Haruhi english translations would be using content from the Strato and Baka-Tsuki translation in areas, and I swear to god that this was on the publishers website. My mind could be playing some kind of horrible trick on me, but to me this is a memory that exists in my head clear as day, complete with a page of sample text from the translations…
This was a year or two before the novels were actually published, although since I haven’t been able to find the same page on the website ever again…
Am I going crazy?
If you can remember the website, maybe you can use the wayback machine (http://www.archive.org/web/web.php) to check.
As a precaution, B-T’s translations are no longer hosted on our servers and instead are replaced with links to the files on free file hosting websites. We hope this isn’t a major inconvenience for anyone.
I suggest to block access to the english version from inside the United States, and only allow other countries (like mine
) to access them. This will definitely save lots of copyright problems.
Please, at least keep the download for later novel that still hasnt come out. mainly 7 and above.
UGHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DO YOU KNOW HOW LONG WE HAVE TO WAIT FOR ALL THE LIGHT NOVELS TO BE OUT IN ENGLISH!?! THE SECOND ONE CAME OUT IN OCTOBER AND THE THIRD (which has a very good anime version) ONE ISN’T COMING ‘TIL JULY! HOW LONG IS THAT? NINE MONTHS!!! IN JAPAN IT WAS ONLY THREE! WE ONLY GET TWO VOLUMES PER YEAR? THAT’S SO LONG!
IT’S NO FAIR! I GOT UPSET OVER IT COMING IN JULY ABOUT SIX TIMES AND I GOT UPSET OVER THE TRANSLATIONS BEING GONE TWICE!
D=
Why remove the download link??!!! Its SO HARD 2 get haruhi novels in Malaysia. Our bookstores didnt sell them bcz Haruhi is not very popular here (My friends oso called me freak). Plz dont seperate my haruhi from me. WAWAWAWAWAWA!!!!!
Ps: I only manage 2 dwload chp 1-7. So sad.
Hey, check out my thread in the forum. http://www.haruhisuzumiya.net/haruhiforum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=53
Again, no insult to the BT translators who obviously worked hard but their translation isn’t that great, often there are phrases still in japanese with translators notes.
Parts of it also seem like it was written by someone who’s first language isn’t English, the style is very stilted at times.
so? what’s soo rich is the english versions have been deleted but any other language hasn’t and if B-T worked for hachette it still is a dumb (not to mention stupid) move and destroy B-T’s project cause they will not get much fans as they used to have
seriously what’s with that?
At the very least, the english translation for the haruhi suzumiya series is actually good. This is only a rumor, but i heard that the translation of Shakugan no Shana was terrible.
