The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Episode 8

8 August 2008 No Comment

Episode 8. Remote Island Syndrome (Part 2)

Haruhi and the gang try to solve the mystery behind the villa owner’s murder, initially suspecting his brother because the two were seen having an argument the day before. Haruhi and Kyon suspect the brother may be trying to leave the island by boat during the storm and head out to find him. They nearly fall into the ocean and dry off in a cave where Haruhi reaches some conclusions about the murder. Haruhi solves the murder mystery, revealing that it was all a mystery game and that the owner was only faking. The whole event turns out to be set up by Koizumi and the Organization with the people at the villa as hired actors.

Trivia:
- Episode 8 is basically a giant tribute to Detective Conan. When Kyon and Haruhi sneak back into the room with the “corpse”, they are animated as detail-less, black shadows with big white eyes, which is a common technique famous in Detective Conan. When Haruhi finally reveals who the “culprit” really is, a jazzy saxophone arrangement can be heard that is very similar in both theme and melody to the music played when Conan solves his own cases.
- The scene where Haruhi solves the murder mystery at the end is a reference to the Phoenix Wright Nintendo DS games (Gyakuten Saiban in Japan).
- When Haruhi and Kyon are talking outside their rooms (at 4:20), we see Haruhi’s legs as she paces. She pauses and turns to Kyon but her legs turn individually, her right leg becoming her left and her left becoming her right. This was fixed in the DVD version and dub.
