Volume 1: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

1 August 2008 9 Comments

It’s a shame that they did not release the translated versions of the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya light novels along with the anime DVDs in North America (EDIT: Haruhi Suzumiya light novels are available in English as of 2009) . The author of the series, Nagaru Tanigawa , is a great writer and deserves to have his work available to fans of Haruhi who unfortunately don’t know Japanese. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya was not Tanigawa-sensei’s first book, but is by far his most popular series. It was first published on June 6, 2003 and won the grand prize at the eighth annual Sneaker Award (The Sneaker is a popular Japanese magazine which publishes short stories). And we also can’t forget Noizi Ito, who provided the first illustrations of Haruhi and other characters we have come to love from the series.

Below is the first volume of the Haruhi Suzumiya light novels. There are so far 9 volumes published. Credit for the translation goes to Baka Tsuki, a group which freely provides professionally translated versions of popular Japanese light novels which may never see the light of day overseas. Be sure to visit their site for superb translations of other great novels.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya:

Synopsis: Not your average Japanese High School Story! Kyon is a first year student at North High. Sitting behind him is an intelligent, energetic and very bored Suzumiya Haruhi who introduces herself as having no interest in “normal humans” and that any aliens, time travelers, sliders, or espers should come forward and join her. Why is she so particular about non-humans? “Because humans are no fun at all!” Kyon is soon wrapped up in this unusual girl’s attempts to make life more interesting, and quickly discovers the world is a lot more amazing than Haruhi could ever be allowed to know.

Saddly, Baka Tsuki no longer has the translations up. They were asked to take it down after Brown Books began to translate it.
