“The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Part 1″

Kyon, a rather apathetic young man, starts his first year as a high school student. He is expecting a normal boring school year until Haruhi Suzumiya appears. During class self-introductions, Haruhi declares that she has no interest in normal human beings and asks that any time-travelers, aliens, or espers to come to her. Kyon’s friends who have gone to the same junior high as Haruhi tell Kyon about her peculiar behavior. Interested in her, Kyon approaches Haruhi and starts chatting with her everyday before class starts. He is the one who gives Haruhi the idea to start her own club, much to his regret later on. Haruhi forces Kyon to join, and also enlists the former occupant of the club room, Nagato Yuki, and a cute girl she grabbed from another classroom, Mikuru Asahina. Without consulting anybody else, she has already made up the name of the club: the Spreading Excitement All Over the World with the Haruhi Suzumiya Brigade or SOS for short.

Trivia:
- In the first cut of the opening credits where Haruhi is seen full figure profile looking up at a shooting star in the night sky, followed by the zoom up close on her face, is a parody of the opening to Visions of Escaflowne.
- In the opening theme, an image of Yuki standing in what appears to be snow, is a reference to an almost identical illustration shown, in ‘The Indignation of Haruhi Suzumiya’, Chapter ‘Editor in Chief, Straight Ahead!’, highlighting Yuki Nagato’s story about how she got her name.
- When Haruhi Suzumiya is ranting about why she dragged an upperclass girl into the club, she holds up two magazines, both with characters from “Shuffle” on the cover. Yuko Goto (Mikuru Asahina), Tomokazu Sugita (Kyon), and Sayako Aoki (Kyon’s little sister) were the seiyuus of Kaede, Rin, and Lisianthus from “Shuffle”.
- In the ending theme, there is a picture of Haruhi, Yuki, Mikuru and Tsuruya gathered round a large pot, whilst Itsuki and Kyon are standing slightly offside, Kyon wearing a reindeer head. This is a reference to an event in ‘The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya’.

During the gym scene of this episode where Taniguchi is explaining how he rates the girls at school, there is a gunshot for the track runners and they all look over to see Haruhi sprinting like hell….

Right at the gunshot the most awesome song starts playing. For the life of me, I cannot find this track or anything about it (I checked OST….perhaps I missed it?). Does anyone know anything about it? My 3 years of frustrated searching would be so grateful….
