Haruhi Suzumiya

Haruhi is the founder and self nominated chief of the SOS Brigade. She’s smart, beautiful and atheletic, but also tends to be moody and highly unpredictable. The thing Haruhi hates the most is being bored so she always comes up with activities for the SOS Brigade members, whether they like it or not is irrelevant. Other than entertaining herself, the other reason Haruhi began the SOS is for finding aliens, time travelers and espers. Unbeknownst to herself, Haruhi is probably the most supernatural being out there, for she has a god-like power to change the world. This is an unconscious ability which surfaces whenever Haruhi is bored. Because of Haruhi’s powers, three groups have gained an interest in her, namely an alien entity, time travellers from the future and an agency of espers.

Kyon
Kyon provides the narrative in the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and is technically the main character. He was the first person to be coerced by Haruhi to join the SOS Brigade. Kyon was also the one who gave Haruhi the idea to start the club. Although somewhat cynical, Kyon is a rational character and the only one who actively keeps Haruhi in check when she gets out of hand. He is the only ‘normal’ SOS member, but may be the one Haruhi is most interested in. Kyon and Haruhi develop a love relationship through the series, but neither will admit to it.

Yuki Nagato
Nagato is an emotionless and silent member of the SOS Brigade who Haruhi often refers to as a decorational fixture for the club. Nagato has a great love for books and remain motionless for hours just reading. In reality, Nagato is an artificial human sent by an alien being called the Integrated Data Entity to gather data on Haruhi Suzumiya. She has the ability to manipulate data, allowing her to manipulate the properties of objects and predict the future. Nagato has also forms a special relationship with Kyon, and will often listen to his orders and advice.

Mikuru Asahina
Mikuru Asahina was forcibly recruited into the SOS Brigade because she is a “pretty faced loli with big breasts”, as Haruhi described her. She is timid and soft spoken, but Haruhi mostly exploits her sex appeal to promote the club, often forcing Mikuru to do various cosplay. Mikuru is actually a time traveler from a future civilization who was sent to investigate the oddity in the current time frame which prevents any time travel beyond this point. She has developed a crush on Kyon, but restrains herself fearing her actions would destabilize Haruhi.

Itsuki Koizumi
Itsuki is the typical anime pretty boy with a aura of coolness around him. He was recruited by Haruhi to fit her bill of the “mysterious transfer student”. Itsuki always keeps a calm personality and constantly carries a smile. He is in fact an esper who was sent by the Agency to observe Haruhi Suzumiya. Although Itsuki possesses ESP-like powers, he may only use them when he enters one the closed spaces generated unconsciously by Haruhi. Once inside, he transforms into a glowing red sphere and combats the blue giants which would otherwise destroy the world if left unchecked.

You forgot to mention that Kyon likes Mikuru also. He actually liked Mikuru before he relized he liked Haruhi!!

He never says he liked Haruhi but he really appreciates her, still not in a romantic way (Kyon makes an ‘uuugh!’ face when remembering the kiss after waking up and when Koizumi mentions it). Kyon has a minor crush on Mikuru but it’s mostly based on her looks and undeniable moé.

I see the Haruhi and Kyon relationship better, Kyon only appreciates Mikuru becuase she’s pretty and annoyingly helpless… He likes Haruhi i’m guessing because she’s bold. PLus in the first ep he said she was a “striking Beauty” and he likes her hair in pony tails and thinks she’s good at sports and very deep.

Actually, I think Kyon likes both Haruhi and Mikuru, but Haruhi a little more because he knows her a little better.

There’s definitely an implied love between the Haruhi and Kyon, they just have a hard time admitting it. And I believe Haruhi loves/chooses him because he is really the first and only person that truly accepts her for who she is. It’s probably one of the most amazing stories of love I’ve ever heard.

Meh…I tend to be biased towards KyonxHaruhi, but these character descriptions are just a little bit opinionated, because technically Kyon never “admitted” he likes Haruhi, nor vice versa. Also, Mikuru developing a crush on Kyon is almost certainly true in my mind but never *technically* proven as canon in the novels. Also, it’s pretty obvious that Kyon has a thing for Mikuru, at least for her looks. Personally I find redeeming qualities in all three pairings and think Kyon has a “special” relationship with all of them (even Koizumi lol), but in the end, no matter how hard my mind wants to tell me I like KyonxYuki, KyonxHaruhi will always win out. For me.
